When the Job Wants a Tablet, Keep the Tally Book as a backup.

Pipeline and Related Facilities Tally Book (Fabrication Welding, Ninth Edition) on a tablet

Some jobs require a tablet. The daily report, the weld status, and the photo of the weld go into the company system before you leave the right of way. That record is real. It is also one screen, one login, one update, one signal bar, a hot day, or a dead battery from being blank.

The tablet is good at what it was built for. If everything is right.

Gloves are wet. The sun washes the screen. You unlock it, find the app, scroll to the weld, and wait for the page to load.

The tally book is already open. It is ready by your side, easy to hold with a glove on, and fast to flip to the page you were on. No login. No glare. One line, written while you are standing at the weld: station, weld number, welder ID, initials, length, heat, bend, and coating, NDT method and report, and the call, accept, repair, or cut-out. The same columns every joint, so the next person can read it without being there.

Use the tablet for the report the company requires. Use the tally book for the notes you need before getting to your truck. When the upload fails, the book is still in your hand. When the auditor asks which weld was cut-out, flip to the page and the information is there.
