Every inspector on the spread started somewhere, and a lot of them started as welders/laborers. The difference between staying on the shovel or throwing skids and moving into inspection usually isn't luck. It's education and certifications, earned one step at a time.
Why invest in yourself
Pipeline work comes in waves. When jobs get tight, the people with certifications get the call first. Every cert you earn shows a company you know the work, you take it seriously, and you're worth more than an entry-level rate. The money and time you put in now pays off for years.
Step 1: OSHA 10 & 30
This is where everyone should start. It's a short safety course that covers the basics of working on a construction site, and many jobs require it before you can step on the right of way. It's low cost, quick, and shows you're serious from day one.

Step 2: CPWI <5 years experience
The Certified Pipeline Welding Inspector certification focuses on pipeline welding and inspection. It's a solid step for a hand who's been around the pipe gang and the firing line and wants to move toward the inspection side.
Step 3: CWI/SCWI >5 years experience
The AWS Certified Welding Inspector / Senior Certified Welding Inspector is one of the best-known welding inspection certs in the industry. It takes study and real welding-related experience to qualify, and it opens doors on pipelines, stations, fabrication work, refineries, ship yards, the space industry, and bridge work.

Step 4: NACE coating certifications
Now under AMPP, NACE coating inspector training covers coatings and corrosion protection. Coating inspectors are needed on almost every job, so this adds another lane you can work in.

Step 5: API 1169 & API 1184
The API 1169 Pipeline Construction Inspector & API 1184 Pipeline Facility Construction Inspector certification covers the whole job: safety, environmental rules, and pipeline construction inspection. Many operators look for it when they hire inspectors.

Look a year ahead
Pick one cert to finish this year. Study at night, save toward the exam fee, and ask the inspectors on your spread how they got there. One year from now, you could be applying for a different job than the one you have today.
Start the habit now
Inspectors live by their records. Start logging what you see on the job now, like station, weld numbers, and what the crew did, and you'll already think like an inspector when the cert comes. It doesn't matter what the critics say, it matters how hard you laugh on your way to the bank.
